Engineering Brightness – Help End Light Poverty

Imagine not having light to study by after the sun goes down. Today, there are more than 1.3 billion people around the world without access to reliable electricity because of the infrastructure, high cost, or insufficient housing. Light poverty, or a lack of access to light, especially after dark, can have many social and economic consequences.

Engineering Brightness has been merging engineering and philanthropy to fight light poverty and make the world brighter since 2013. Over 1,000 students have designed and built solar-powered, 3D-printed lanterns that have been shipped and hand-delivered to communities around the world. Young people don’t just study this problem. They solve it.

The challenge is yours: How will you use your skills, your passions, and your 3Ts to help end light poverty? Whether you have access to a 3D printer, a talent for fundraising, a gift for spreading awareness, or simply the time to get others involved, there is a meaningful role for you in this work. This is engineering, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy all at once — and it starts with the belief that one more lantern lit somewhere in the world is worth every effort.
